The Grates explore the tension between disabled embodiment and queer BDSM nightlife spaces and their seemingly irreconcilable differences despite material similarity. Using techniques of cutting, suturing, tying, bending, welding, and suspending, there is an oscillation between figure and plane. In their accumulation, the grates mark a choreography of wounding and healing, calling upon techniques of packing, exposure, scarring, and edging. In turn, this series prods the duality of irreparable violation and agency. The Grates series is a nod to Park McArthur's ramp series, an exploration of the different types of surfaces a wheelchair or walker could traverse. The Grates however are non-traversable by walker or wheelchair, instead proposing stumbling, limping, and re-routing as valuable crip modes of movement and motion.
