between the skin and flesh, a thing

between the skin and flesh, a thing highlights the collaborative processes inherent to the relationships that sustains Howard’s BDSM practices. Exhibiting a series of photographs printed on transparent leather hides, the materiality of Howard’s body mirrors the reanimation of leather as the veins of the hide shift, spit out, expand, and contract with contact to heat and light. The leather and its images mobilize in shapeshifting form and deterioation while hanging and exposed to gallery lighting, creating a process of slow deterioation that rejects standardized archival practices. The hides hang with another familiar yet distant carnal scent, mixing olfactory receptors within the space of the gallery. The works in relation with the lewd scent highlight the ever changing conditions of sensation in favor of malleability towards a co-authorship of materiality and relationality.
